Our Media Center serves as the heart of the school and is a vital component in the development of lifelong learners. We strive to continue our "tradition of excellence" by providing wonderful resources that have been carefully selected to support and enhance the curriculum offered at Oakhurst Elementary School. We are fully automated and have a collection of over 12,000 items available to our students and staff.
Our Media Center is a busy and exciting place! On any given day, you will find teachers and students utilizing the numerous resources that are available. Oakhurst students visit in small groups or as a whole class to select books to read, conduct research, work on projects, check out materials, and much more.
Our Media Center offers the following services to students and teachers:
* story times for classes
* teaching information-access skills
* assisting with research
* selecting and circulating materials
Our Media Center is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on regular school days. Please contact Suzanne Jerol, library media and instructional technology specialist, with any questions or concerns.

Accelerated Reader is a reading incentive program that we have at Oakhurst. Second and third graders and some first graders are given a short test called STAR to determine their appropriate reading range. Then they are encouraged to check out books within their range and take short quizzes on the computer about the books. The quizzes have 5 or 10 comprehension questions depending on the length of the book. The students then receive points for every quiz they pass. Each student has a goal that was set according to his or her reading level. For example, if a student has a reading range that is pre-primer to mid-first grade, she may have a goal of 6 points to reach per quarter. A student whose reading range is above fourth grade may have a goal of 25 points to reach. We find Accelerated Reader to be a very motivational program for the majority of our students.
