I started my school life at age 6 in a small town in west Tennessee and I've been in school since that day. I graduated from high school determined to be a teacher and stayed the course. I never had to change my major in college or go to school for an extra year or two. But don't worry, the changing came AFTER I started teaching!
I graduated with a B.A. in History from Middle Tennessee State University in beautiful Murfreesboro, TN. (For geography buffs, you might be interested to know that Murfreesboro is the exact geographical center of the state of TN. As a college student, I frequently stood on the actual rock that marked the spot.) Fresh out of college, I became a high school history and economics teacher in my hometown and lasted exactly one year. I found out that I loved learning about history but teaching it all day long was BORING! So, I started taking some graduate courses in special education. Why special education? The superintendent of my school system said he had a special education job opening the following fall. So I got a Master's Degree in Special Education. I taught kids with learning disabilities and behavior disorders in middle school for lots and lots of years in TN and GA. I realized I really liked those behavior disorderd kids in middle school, so I went back to college (GSU, this time) and got my Education Specialist Degree in Behaviors. As soon as I got that degree in my hands, I accepted a job to teach elementary gifted kids in Rockdale County. So, I had to go back to school and get gifted certification. I remember telling friends that if I ever tried to go back for another degree or certification, please feel entirely justified to shoot me.
So here I am, teaching in the gifted program in elementary school...and I am loving it!!!
